ofGalileo)inOxford,England.HisparentshousewasinnorthLondon,butduring
thesecondworldwarOxfordwasconsideredasafercetohavebabies.Whenhe
waseight,hisfamilymovedtoStAlbans,atownabout20minorthofLondon.At
elevenStephenwenttoStAlbansSchool,andthenontoUniversityCollege,Oxford,
hisfathersoldcollege.StephenwantedtodoMathematics,althoughhisfatherwould
havepreferredmedicine.MathematicswasnotavailableatUniversityCollege,sohe
didPhysicsinstead.Afterthreeyearsandnotverymuchworkhewasawardedafirst
classhonoursdegreeinNaturalScience.
StephenthenwentontoCambridgetodoresearchinCosmology,therebeing
no-oneworkinginthatareainOxfordatthetime.HissupervisorwasDenisSciama,
althoughhehadhopedtogetFredHoylewhowasworkinginCambridge.After
gaininghisPh.D.hebecamefirstaResearchFellow,andlateronaProfessorial
FellowatGonvilleandCaiusCollege.AfterleavingtheInstituteofAstronomyin
1973StephencametotheDepartmentofAppliedMathematicsandTheoretical
Physics,andsince1979hasheldthepostofLucasianProfessorofMathematics.The
chairwasfoundedin1663withmoneyleftinthewilloftheReverendHenryLucas,
whohadbeentheMemberofParliamentfortheUniversity.ItwasfirstheldbyIsaac
Barrow,andthenin1663byIsaacNewton.
