Onhandlingmachineryinmanyports,theelectricenergyneededbyallelectricequipmentissuppliedbythebatteryandthegenerator.1Thebatteryisareversiblechemicalpowersource,thatistosay,itcanchangechemicalenergyintoelectricenergyandalsoitcanchangeelectricenergyintochemicalenergy.Generallyspeaking,thefunctionofbatteryusedonICEinmanyportsistosupplyelectriccurrentforoperationofthecrankingmotorandtheignitionsystemwhentheenginestarts.Italsosuppliescurrentforlight,horn,radio,andotherelectricalaccessoriesattimeswhenthegeneratorcannothandletheelectricalload.Theamountofcurrentofthebatteryislimitedtothe“capacity”ofthebattery.Thecapacityofbatterydependsontheamountofchemicalsitcontains.
