Withtheninetofivebeingacommonwaytomakealiving,ourplaceofworkcanbecomelikeasecondhome,sotheconditionsofthatenvironmentcanhaveasignificantinfluenceonourphysicalandmentalhealth.Now,newresearchhasstudiedtheeffectthatabadworkenvironmentcanhaveonourmood,findingthatbosseswhofailtoconsidertheiremployees’mentalhealthputthematathreetimesriskofdepression(抑郁).

Theresearch,publishedintheBMJOpen,wantedtolookintotheworkplacepsychosocialsafetyclimate(PSC)—atermformanagementpracticesandsystemsthatsetouttoconserveworkers’mentalhealthandsafety.Todoso,theyrevieweddataonworkersinAustraliathatlastedoneyeartolookforassociationsbetweenmanagementpracticesandmentalhealthissues.

ThereviewfoundthatpoorworkplacementalhealthcanbetracedbacktolowPSC,whichexhibitedpoormanagementpractices,privilegesandvalues.Whilelonghourswerelinkedtoseverecasesofover-tiredness,theyshowedaweakerassociationwithdepression,andpoormanagementpracticeswerefoundtocauseagreaterriskfordepression.

“Evidenceshowsthatcompanieswhofailtorewardoracknowledgetheiremployeesforhardworkandputunreasonabledemandsonworkers,areplacingtheirstaffatamuchgreaterriskofdepression,”saidleadauthorDr.AmyZadowoftheUniversityofSouthAustraliainastatement.“Wealsofoundthatdepressioninaworkunitcannotonlynegativelyaffectthevictim,butalsotheteammemberswhowitnessthatbehavior.Itisnotuncommonforeveryoneinthesameunittoexperiencedepressionasaresult.”

Depressionaffectsover264millionpeoplearoundtheworldandwhiletreatmentsareavailable,thenumberofdocumentedcasesremainsstrong.It’spossiblethatinsightsfromresearchsuchasthiscouldcontributetowardsloweringthesenumbersbyinformingbettermanagementpracticestoimproveworkpl
