Atthemoment，SongandhercolleaguesareworkingonrestoringacopyofYongleDadian，anencyclopediacreatedin1408．Unfortunately，mostofitsbooksthathavesurviveduntiltodayhavesuffereddamagetotheiroriginalbinding．“Torestorethemtotheiroriginalform，weneedtogatherinformationfromvarioussources，suchasimagesandtexts，beforewecanmakesuretheiroriginalbindingstyleandrepairthemaccordingly，”sheexplained．Moreover，theancientencyclopediassilktextureandcolourhavebothgrowninconsistent，whichmakescreatingthenecessaryrawmaterialsandmatchingthecolourdifficult．

Inthepast，restorershadtorelyontheirexperiencetodeterminetheappropriatematerialstouseforaproject．Astechnologyhasevolved，theyareabletouseanewmethodtofinishthetaskthroughmicroscopes．However，technologycanonlyhelpsomuch，asancientbooksrestorationstillrequiresessentialmanualskills，includingcuttingandbrushingpaperandbinding．Apartfromthis，therestorationalsorequiresstrongcontrolwhenbrushingthepaper．“Ifthepressureisnotproperlycontrolledduringthebrushingprocess，thepapermaytear，butifthetouchistoolight，thepaperwontadhere(黏附)，”Songexplained．

Owingtothemeaningfulandcomplexprocess，theancientbooksrestorationtechniqueof
