Background

TheMarch2011earthquakeoffJapanseastcoasttriggeredtheFukushimaDaiichi

accident,whichresultedinmeltdownsatthreenuclearreactorsandmelteddebris

fromnuclearfuelafteramassivetsunamiknockedoutcoolingsystemsattheplant.

Tocoolthemeltednuclearfuel,seawateriscontinuouslyinjectedintothereactor,

resultinginalargeamountofradionuclide-contaminatedcoolingwater.Despitethe

oppositionofthepeopleofallcountries,theJapanesegovernmentbegantoforcibly

dischargethetreatedFukushimaradioactivewastewaterintothePacificOceanon

August24,2023.Thetotalamountofradioactivewastewatercontaminatedwith

radionuclidesismorethan1milliontons.Thewholeprojectisexpectedtolastatleast

30years.Theappendixisthefour-wheeldischargeplanannouncedbytheJapanese

government.

ThesenucleareffluentscontainTritium,aradioactiveisotopethatcanremaininthe

environmentforaconsiderableamountoftime.Thedegreeofcontaminationof

radioactiveelementsreferstotheamountofradioactiveelementspresentinthe

environmentandthedegreeofpotentialharmtohumansandecosystems.Itisusually

assessedbymeasuringparameterssuchastheconcentrationofradioactiveelements,

radiationlevels,half-life,andsoon.Thehighlyradioactivenatureoftritiumgivesit

thepotentialtodamagecellsandtissueswithradiation.IntheMarineenvironment,

tritiumwillbeabsorbedbyorganismsandenterthefoodchain,whichwillleadto

radiationdamagetospeciesintheecosystem,affectingthereproductionofMarine

organismsandecologicalbalance.
