Inasetofstudiestestingthiseffect,researchersJustinKrugerandDavidDumingaskedparticipantstocompletetestsoftheirskillsinaparticulardomain(suchashumororlogicalreasoning).Then,participantswereaskedtoguesshowwelltheyhaddoneonthetest.Theyfoundthatparticipantshadthetendencytooverestimatetheirabilities,andthiseffectwasmostpronouncedamongparticipantswiththelowestscoresonthetest.

Whydoesithappen?Inaninterview,DavidDunningexplainsthat“theknowledgeandintelligencethatarerequiredtobegoodatataskareoftenthesamequalitiesneededtorecognizethatoneisnotgoodatthattask.”Inotherwords,ifsomeoneknowsverylittleaboutaparticulartopic,theymaynotevenknowenoughaboutthetopictorealizethattheirknowledgeislimited.

Importantlysomeonemaybehighlyskilledinonearea,butbesusceptibletotheDunning-Krugereffectinanotherdomain.ThismeansthateveryonecanpotentiallybeaffectedbytheDunning-Krugereffect.Dunningexplainsinanarticlethat“Youmaythinkthisdoesn’tapplytoyou.Buttheproblemofunrecognizedignoranceisonethatvisitsusall.”

WhatcanpeopledotoovercometheDunning-Krugereffect?Theresearchersfoundthattrainingmadeadifference.Aftercompletingashorttrainingsessiononlogicalreasoning,theparticipantswhoscoredinthebottom25percentloweredtheirestimateofhowwelltheythoughttheyhaddoneontheprevioustest.Inotherwords,onewaytoovercometheDunning-Krugereffectmaybetolearnmoreaboutatopic.
