VusiMdoyi,ayoungboygrowingupinapoortownshipnearJohannesburginthe1980s,wasfascinatedbythedancemoveshesawaroundhim.Therapidfoottaps,complexkneetwists,andbodyshakescametogetherinauniquestyleknownaspantsula,adanceformthatofferedashortmomentofjoyinthedarkdaysofpoverty.
Atjust5yearsold,Vusibeganimitatingthedancemovesanddisplayedaprecocioustalentforit.By10,heperformedinschoolfestivals.Now,at44,Vusiisacelebrateddancerandchoreographer(编舞者)whohashelpedimprovepantsulafromastreetarttoarespectedglobaldanceform.
In1998,whilestillateenager,VusiparticipatedinworkshopsorganizedbyStepAfrika!,adancecompanythatcombinedAfricanAmericanstepdancingwithtraditionalAfricanstyles.ThisexposuretointernationaldancehelpedVusibecomeproudofpantsula,astylethathadoncebeenignored.
Encouragedbythatrecognitionandthepassiontomakethisartformknowntomorepeople,Vusimadehisfirstoverseastripin2001toteachpantsulainBritain.Thenthefollowingyear,hetouredinternationallywithViaKatlehong,adancecompanyfromhistownship.
Vusi’slatestdance,“TheTatteredSoulofaWorker”,performedinSowetoin2023,reflectshisjourneyandthechallengesofSouthAfricanmigrant(迁移的)workers.Thedancers,dressedinmid-centurysuitsandcarryingbeercrates,criticizethecapitalist(资本主义的)systemthatforcesworkerstoendurehardships.
BlackSouthAfricansbegantotakeuptapdancinginthe1960safterseeingitinAmericanfilms.Thateventuallydevelopedintopantsula,whichstartedintownships,whereBlackSouthAfricanswereforcedtolive.Inthe1990s,Vusiandotherdancersseizedtheopportunitytoturntheirpassionintoart,foreverchangingtheglobalperceptionofdancefromSouthAfrica.
