AstheimprovementofEnglishteachinginChina,listening,speaking,reading,writingarementionedasthefourbasicskills.Amongthefourskills,writingisoneofthemostimportantmeansofcommunication,andhasbeenplayingasignificantroleinconveyingpeople’sideasandfeelings.AsurveyconductedinShanghaiearlyin1983onagroupofex-graduatesabouttheirfeelingoftheusefulnessofEnglishwritingindicatesthatwritinginEnglishisverynecessaryintheirday-to-daywork.Theyneeditinbusinessletterstoforeignclientsorwritingacademicabstractsandessaysforinternationalconferencesandpublications(Wang,1992).

However,itisalsoregardedasthemostdifficultpartforthelearners.EventhesestudentswhohaveagoodmasterofvocabularyandgrammarstillhavemanyproblemsinEnglishwritingsuchaslackingofcohesiondeviceanddiscoursecoherence(LǚYan,2009).AlthoughChineseeducatorshavebeinginvolvedintheimprovementofwritingteachingmethodology,itisnoticedthatinthesemethodologiestheprincipalunitisthesentence,anditisthesentence,ratherthanthetextasawhole,thathasreceivedtheprimaryfocusofstudy(Johns,1984).

AlongwiththedevelopmentandpopularizationoffunctionalgrammarinChina,researchonEnglishwritingonthebaseofdiscourseanalysisisbeinggivenmuchmoreconcernthanbefore(QinWen,2007;WeiLi,2009;KangMa,2008).As“thefunctionofadiscourseisasemanticconceptwhichisembodiedbythecombinationofCohesion,InformationStructureandThematicStructure”(HuangHuang,2009)andthat“Thematicanalysiscanbeofusetoteacherstolaythefoundationsforaprincipledapproachtothediscourse-basedsyllabusandawarenessofthematicorganizationcanbeofvaluetolearnersinhelpingthemtosh
