ComprehensibleoutputInthefieldofSecondLanguageAcquisition,therearemanytheoriesaboutthemosteffectivewayforlanguagelearnerstoacquirenewlanguageforms.OnetheoryoflanguageacquisitionistheComprehensibleOutputHypothesis.

DevelopedbyMerrillSwain,theComprehensibleOutput(CO)HypothesisstatesthatlearningtakesplacewhenencounteringagapinthelinguisticknowledgeoftheL2.Bynoticingthisgapthelearnerbecomesawareofitandmightbeabletomodifyhisoutputsothathelearnssomethingnewaboutthelanguage[1]AlthoughSwaindoesnotclaimthatcomprehensibleoutputissolelyresponsibleforallorevenmostlanguageacquisition,shedoesclaimthatundersomeconditions,COfacilitatessecondlanguagelearninginwaysthatdifferfromandenhanceinputduetothementalprocessesconnectedwiththeproductionoflanguage.[2]
