ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF2029;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

Scope

Thesepracticescoverlaboratorypreparationofheat-sealsandthetreatmentandevaluationofheatsealstrengthdataforthepurposeofdeterminingheatsealabilityofflexiblebarriermaterials.

Testingstrengthorotherpropertiesoftheheatsealsformedbythesepracticesisnotincludedinthisstandard.RefertoTestMethodsF88fortestingheatsealstrength.

Thepracticesofthisstandardarerestrictedtosealingwithamachineemployinghot-barjaws.Impulse,high-frequency,andultrasonicheatingmethodsarenotincluded.

Thesepracticesapplyprimarilytowebsintendedtobeusedoncommercialmachinesemployingreciprocatingsealingjaws,suchasmostverticalform-fillpackagingmachines,platenheatsealers,etc.Conditionsofdwelltimeandsealingpressureonmachinesofthistypetypicallyaredifferentfromthoseonrotarymachinesbyanorderofmagnitudeormore.

Theproceduresofthesepracticeswithrespecttochoiceofheatsealingconditionsapplyequallywhethertheapplicationistoultimatesealstrengthorhottackmeasurement.

Sealsmaybemadebetweenwebsofthesameordissimilarmaterials.Theindividualwebsmaybehomoge-neousinstructureormultilayered(coextruded,coated,lami-nated,etc.).
