ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF2201;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

Scope

Thisconsumersafetyspecificationcoversallflame-producingconsumerproductscommonlyknownasutilitylighters(alsoknownasgrilllighters,fireplacelighters,lightingrods,orgasmatches)andsuchsimilardevicesasdefinedin

3.1.14.Matchesarespecificallyexcludedfromthisspecifica-tion;flame-producingproductsintendedforignitingcigars,pipes,andcigarettesarealsospecificallyexcludedfromthissafetyspecificationandarecoveredinConsumerSafetySpecificationF400.

Thisspecificationestablishesrequirementsforutilitylighterstoensureareasonabledegreeofsafetyfornormaluseandreasonablyforeseeablemisuseofsuchutilitylightersbyusers.

Utilitylighters,beingflame-producingdevices,can,ascanallflamesources,presentapotentialhazardtotheuser.Thisspecificationcannoteliminateallhazards,butitisintendedtominimizepotentialhazardsofutilitylighterstousers.

ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.

Allutilitylightersaresubjecttothemandatorychildresistancerequirementsfoundat16CFRPart1212andthelabelingrequirementsfoundat16CFRPart1500.SeeAnnexA2.
