StandardConsumerSafetySpecificationfor
PortableBedRails1
ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF2085;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.
INTRODUCTION
Thisconsumersafetyspecificationaddressesportablebedrailincidentsthatwereidentifiedbythe
U.S.ConsumerProductSafetyCommission(CPSC).
InresponsetoincidentdatasuppliedbytheCPSC,thisconsumersafetyspecificationattemptstominimizethefollowingtypeofpotentialhazardthroughlabelingandperformancerequirements:entrapmentbetweentheportablebedrailandmattressinthebedrailstructureandentanglementonprotrusions.Entrapmentofachildbytheheadorneckcanresultinasphyxiation.
Thisconsumersafetyspecificationiswrittenwithinthecurrentstate-of-the-artofportablebedrailtechnology.Itisintendedthatthisspecificationwillbeupdatedwheneversubstantiveinformationbecomesavailablethatnecessitatesadditionalrequirementsorjustifiestherevisionofexistingrequirements.
Thisconsumersafetyspecificationisnotintendedtocoverbedrailsthatareeitherblatantlymisusedorusedinacarelessmannerthatdisregardsthesafetyinstructionsinthewarningstatementsprovidedwitheachbedrail.
Scope
Thisconsumersafetyspecificationestablishesrequire-mentsfortheperformanceofportablebedrails.Italsocontainsrequirementsforlabelingandinstructionalliterature.
Thisconsumersafetyspecificationisintendedtomini-mizehazardstochildrenresultingfromnormaluseandreasonablyforeseeablemisuseofportablebedrails.
Forthepurposeofthisconsumersafetyspecification,aportablebedrailisadeviceintendedtobeinstalledonan
