ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF2236;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

INTRODUCTION

ThisconsumersafetyspecificationisintendedtoaddressincidentsreportedbytheU.S.ConsumerProductSafetyCommission(CPSC)relatingtosoftinfantcarriers.

InresponsetotheincidentdatacompiledbytheCPSC,thisconsumersafetyspecificationattemptstominimizethehazardsassociatedwiththeseproductsfromthefollowing:(1)occupantretention,(2)structuralintegrity,(3)deficiencyofconsumereducationregardingproductuse.Thisconsumersafetyspecificationisintendedtodealwithreasonablyforeseeableuseandmisuseoftheproducts.Thisconsumersafetyspecificationdoesnotapplytoproductsthatareblatantlymisused,nordoesitapplytoproductsusedbyconsumersinacarelessmannerthatviolatenormalpracticeordisregardtheinstructionsorwarningsprovidedwiththeproduct,orboth.

Scope

Thisconsumersafetyspecificationestablishesperfor-mancerequirements,testmethodsandmarkingrequirementstopromotesafeuseofsoftinfantcarriers.

Thisconsumersafetyspecificationisintendedtomini-mizetheriskofincidentstoaninfantfromthenormaluseandreasonablyforeseeablemisuseoftheseproducts.

Forpurposesofdefinition,asoftinfantcarrierisaproduct,normallyofsewnfabricconstruction,whichisde-signedtocontainafullterminfant,generallyinanuprightposition,incloseproximitytothecaregiver.Ingeneral,thechildwillweighbetween7and25lb(3.2and11.3kg).Thesoftinfantcarrierisnormally“worn”bythecaregiverwiththecar
