Abstract: A theoretical analysismodel was developed for a kind of convergent gap hydrostatic m echanical seal. Using
the finite elem ent method, under a certain closing force, the effect of sealing surface structure parameters on sealing per
form ancew as analyzed. By using theMATLAB optmi ization toolbox, the optmi ization of structure param etersw as carried out
w ith the target ofmaxmi um static stiffness. Results show that the transition radius and cone angle have sign ificant effect on
the sealing perform ance. Through the optmi ization, the best structure parameters can be got, achieving them axmi um static
stiffnessw ith in a certain range of leakage rate.
