Research into reading learning, however, received little attention during the 1950sand 1960s and was a neglected part of second language learning. During the 1970s, research into reading learning began to grow in applied linguistics and has gradually become a focus of much research at present. As Dubin points out,?“the study of reading has changed from being the?“poor relation” of second language education in the past into the role of?“guest of honor” at present.”1With the enhancement of the status of reading, the importance of reading in second language acquisition has been greatly recognized. Widdowson aptly states that?‘while without grammar very little can be conveyed, without reading nothing can be conveyed.’2The fundamental role of reading in successful second language learning has been well established. It is recognized now that mastery of reading is in an essential component of second language acquisition, and therefore learners must enlarge their reading in order to become proficient in a second language.With the tendency of globalization and China’s entry into WTO, the significant role of English has become all the more evident. To help them to study English reading more effectively and efficiently, it is necessary to explore the reading strategies they actually use in their reading process.II. Necessary Theories in Improving Students’ Reading AbilityA.
