Victorian readers found the book shocking and inappropriate in its depiction of passionate, uncontrolled love and cruelty, so this novel was virtually ignored. Even her sister Charlotte remained ambivalent toward the unapologetic intensity of the novel. In the preface of this book, which she wrote shortly after Emily Bronte’s death, Charlotte stated,?“Whether it is right or advisable to create beings like Heathcliff, I do not know. I scarcely think it is.”1The novel tells a story of tragic love. Wuthering Heights is the name of a grange in a mountainous area. One day, its old owner Mr. Earnshaw brings home a sallow, rugged foundling he has found wandering in the street of Liverpool, whom he names Heathcliff. The children grow up together; Catherine comes to love Heathcliff while Hindley hates him from jealousy of his father’s fondness for the waif.When the parents die, Hindley, in revenge, degrades Heathcliff in every way he can. Heathcliff grows brutal and morose. What is more, Catherine, though actually she cares for Heathcliff more than anyone else, she is attracted to the handsome and mild Edgar Linton and agrees eventually to marry him. This hurts Heathcliff deeply, and he suddenly disappears. A few years later, he resurfaces. He gambles with Hindley and encourages the latter to slide to alcoholism. He elopes with Edgar’s sister Isabella and torments Catherine ruthlessly. Finally Catherine dies. After Catherine dies, all the sorrow makes him carry out his crazy plans of revenge.
