Introduction Mark Twain, the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, is the forerunner and reputed realist American literary giant. Because of his remarkable contribution to the nation, literary critics spoke highly of his achievements. His early works such as The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras Country and Running for Governor aim to expose cheating and the essence of American election with humorous style. His later works such as The Million Pound Note focus on the opportunism and money worship, of course, his style is inclined to satire instead. All of his works are considered as the masterpiece of American literature. In the later of 19th century, with the advent of American Imperialism, The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg is Mark Twain’s representative opus. II. Generalization of Mark Twain’s Novels Mark Twain was deeply affected by the civilian oral literature and humorous literature of U.S. and absorbed in many jokes and folktales, therefore, he created a large mount of humorous works. Although many writers and poets of U.S. have tried to add some national themes into their works, they were affected even restricted by British traditional literature, so that their works were lack of American character.?
