Communication advances the form of the human’s Cognitive Structure and the development of the human’s intelligence. Language, which is peculiar to human, is an important means of human communication. With the development of language, there are many kinds of language patterns which are used to express and exchange views of people. So there exits ambiguity and puns which express two or more than two meanings with only one word, phrase or sentence. Therefore, concerned the forms only, they are identical or similar. Actually, they are two different concepts in Linguistic. Ambiguity is a language phenomenon which exits in our conversation popularly. Usually, it becomes the obstacle to get the successful communication. However, people are making good efforts to use it with great finesse in order to achieve a certain rhetorical effort. Pun is a kind of figure of speech, which appears in literature originally. It takes advantage of the words which have the same pronunciation but different meanings or the words which obtain more than one meaning. Its language is usually humorous and implicit. Because of its unique feature, it is vastly used in literature, advertisement and so on. The features, similarities and differences of the two are analyzed in the thesis in order to help people to avoid the negative impacts of ambiguity and make good use of puns in the communication.II. AmbiguityWhen an expression has two or more meanings, ambiguity exists. Ambiguity is different from vagueness. The possible meanings of vagueness are quite extensive.
