Traditionally large families now split into nuclear families of parents and their 2 children. Women do not perceive commitment to the family as a deprival of right and actively share the responsibility to ensure family well-being with their husbands, who used to be the only representative of the household. Power relations in rural families are reflected in the relation between husband and wife, relations between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, as well as in the right to make major decisions. (1) Relations between husband and wife. In rural Henan, wives call their husbands “dangjiade” (master) or “zhangguide” (boss). These seemingly simple terms of address include a number of implications for power relations in rural families . In the investigated villages, most wives live with their husbands’ families regardless of whether they come from the same region as their 3 4 husbands . Such a tradition implies an agnatic kinship . That is, after marriage, a woman will join her husband’s kinship network and leave that of her parents. She looses touch with relatives on her parents’ side, and her husband’s relatives become her new family.
