Abstract
For several years, the linguists have paid much attention to the language and its learning. In the paper, I will provide my understanding of the theories of language and language learning. There are four parts in this part. The first part is the introduction some about the applied linguistics. The second part is something about the language such as its definition, design features and theories. As we know, the main purpose we study things of language is to provide the methods or tool with the language learning. So the third part involves the theories of language, their contributions and the criticisms they have gone through. And the last part is my understanding from those theories.
1. Introduction
Some people say that the learning and teaching of foreign languages is referred to as applied linguistics, and other people argue that the learning and teaching of foreign languages is only one of many sub-areas of applied linguistics. Then, there are different kinds of definitions about applied linguistics because researchers have different opinions. Generally, applied linguistics can be defined in a broad sense or in a narrow sense. Broadly speaking, applied linguistics covers more than the teaching and leaning of languages. It includes speech pathology and therapy, translation, lexicography, machine translation, contrastive linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and language policy, etc. In one word, it includes anything to which linguistics could
