Abstract Although universal banking system has been the general trend in the global financial field and prevails for long in many developed countries, China, which begins open its financial market for few days and keeps on its reforming process, has little experience in this field. Looking for a financial developing mode fits China, dealing with the pressure of global competition, making a strong backup for the economy of China, are very significant tasks right now. This paper aims to construct a systematical frame both theoretical and practical explaining the trend of universal banking system, also gives advices on its construction in China. To follow such a logic chain, this paper includes following several parts: In the first part, the author gives clear definitions of correlative concepts, differentiates two kinds of universal banks, and analyzes the history and developing process of universal banking system. In the second part, the author constructs the theoretical base of the existence and development of universal banking system. The theory of modern financial intermediaries explains the reasons of financial intermediaries’ existence from different points, while the theory of innovation explains the developments of financial intermediaries. At last, a model of game theory explains the relationship of financial innovation and financial supervision. In the third part, the author focuses on China, analyzing its practice on universal banking system and the developing trend, paying special attention on financial supervision, and gives advices of relative issues.
