ABSTRACT st In the context of globalization since mankind entered the 21 century, nation/states have been increasingly interdependent while competing with each other. Developed countries in Euro-America and Asia-Pacific regions, and newly industrializing developing countries as well, have been promoting “internationalization” of education as a responsive development strategy. Driven by growing and diversifying demands from governments and societal/institutional/individual stakeholders, “International Education” has enhanced its strategic roles in national development and both international understanding, and both its forms and contents have been increasingly diversified as well. Based on a clear definition of the term of “International Education” and an exploration of its evolution, this thesis focuses on major development trends of international education in recent decade, which include the following: 1) International education is being elevated as an important strategy of national development and national securities. 2) International education becoming a significant approach to “learning to live together” and increased international understanding. 3) International education strongly pushed by international organizations; 4) International education has been protected by relevant laws, regulations and state policies; 5) International education rapid expending cross-border student flows; 6) International education promoting internationalization of curriculum standards and contents especially in math and sciences; 7) International education promoting sh
