ABSTRACT Conjunctions, an important tool to tie a text, have drawn much attention from researchers home and abroad. Researchers in China have studied the differences in the use of conjunctions between Chinese learners and native speakers, probed into the use of conjunctions by Chinese learners of different levels, found out the relationship between the use of conjunctions and the quality of writing and the kind of conjunctions favored by Chinese learners,and studied the misuse and overuse of logical conjunctions. But few of them have made a detailed study on the use of conjunctions by senior high school students. The thesis analyzes the current situation of English writing in high schools in China by means of a questionnaire conducted for senior high students in a school in Jiangsu Province. The questionnaire concerns teachers strategies of teaching writing, ways of assessing students’ writing, the process of teaching writing, learners writing strategies and habits, and the effects of the teaching. 398 Grade One students participated in the survey. The results of the questionnaire show that most of the teachers have come to realize the importance of conjunctions in cohesion and have adopted some methods to teaching English writing. Meanwhile, by applying Halliday and Hasan’s theories on cohesion and conjunction in English discourse ,the thesis analyzes the use of conjunctions in English argumentative writing by 88 Chinese senior high school students. The thesis found that the frequency of conjunctions is significantly high but the variety of conjunctions is limited. These problems are mainly due to students’ inadequate understanding of English discourse and the functions of conjunctions ,and English teachers’ inefficient teaching of conjun
