The single layer of inte stinal ep ithelial cells serve s a s a dynam ic in terface between the ho st and external environm ent. In addition to inte stinal tract comp rising the large st surface area of the body, the inte stinal m uco sa is con stantly expo sed to a va st array of m icrobe s, food antigen s, and toxin s. It mu st accommodate the symb iotic bacteria and m aintain m uco sal dynam ic equ ilib rium by contro lling inflamm atory re spon se, inden tifying danger signals of poten tial harm fu l p athogen s.
