No.44 2009pp.177 185 DEM An Analysis of the Flood Area in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River by Satellite and DEM Data Yasunori NAKAYAMA , Jun NAKAMURA , Hidehiko ABE and Du YUN Received October 31, 2008 This paper describes the estimation of ﬂooded area and its damaged land cover in the plain of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River through the integrated analysis of DEM data, bank distribution data extracted and land cover data clas- siﬁed from LANDSAT/ETM+ with referring to the ﬁeld survey information. Two study areas including Dongting Hu and - Poyang Hu for investigation were selected. The characteristics of ﬂood was ﬁrstly investigated based on the large scale ﬂood in 1998 by using the existing JERS- 1/SAR mosaic data. Next, the estimation of ﬂood area, the water depth and the damaged land use were carried out. A few points of breaking on the embankment were set at the place where the river - winds large its way across the plain. It was shown that the area around Dongting Hu is liable to occur large scale ﬂood in comparison with the area around Poyang Hu because of different geomorphological features. The possibility of the occur- rence of the wide area inundation in the left bank and the great damage in the right bank side were shown as the ﬂood characteristics in the former area.
