Methods H ospitalized elderly patients without acute infections and healthy elderly persons durin health ex amination were enrolled in this study . An oropharyn eal sw ab was taken from each subject after ar lin w ith sterile saline. Bacteria w ere cultured and identified w ith routine methods and the antimicrobial suscept ibility testin w as carried out with disk diffusion method. Results T he prevalence of oropharyn eal bacterial carria e was 55 . 2 % ( 5 8/ 10 5) in the hospitalized and 32 . 1% ( 161/ 50 1) in the non-hospitalized elderly people ( P 0 . 0 01) . Gram-ne ative bacilli w ere the most common bacteria carried in both the hospitalized and non-hospitalized elderly peo- ple. The most common bacterial species w ere H aemop hilus spp. , followed by K lebsiellap neumoniae.
