A fter prolific in estigations intom etaphor o er the past few years, the focus of metaphor research has sh ifted from lex ical and
syn tactical le els to discoursal le el. A lthough the role of metaphor in the analysis of discourse coherence and com prehension has
been recogn ized, m ost of the current researches are still concerned w ith the rhetorical function of m etaphor in d iscourse. The
present paper, how e er, attemp ts to pro ide an integrated analysis of cogn iti e, sem antic and pragmatic features of m etaphor so
as to explicate their con tributions to the study of discourse coherence.
