A bstrac t: Vibrio cholerae is the etiolo ic a en t of cho lera that ex ists in aquatic environm ent. Unfavourab le
environm en t could lead to the dorm ant state of the m icroor anism, i. e. the viab le but nonculturab le ( V BNC ) state.
V BNC cells cou ld not be detected by standard cu lturem ethods but rem ain to be virulen,t and they cou ld be resuscitated
and cause disease th rou h access to an an mi al host. This paper summ aries the V BNC state of Vibrio cholerae from
aspects of biolo ical characteristics, detect m ethods, patho en icity, transcriptional prof ile, and em phasizes its
si n ificance to pub lic health.
