[Abstract] Aims: Long-term follow-up data after modified percutaneous transhepatic variceal embolization are presented, and the multi-detector row computed tomography angiography for assessing therapeutic effect was evaluated. Methods: The subjects of this prospective study were 156 patients who underwent percutaneous transhepatic variceal embolization with cyanoacrylate for esophageal varices. Patients were divided into three groups according to the filling range of cyanoacrylate in esophageal varices and their feeding vessels: (1) group A, complete obliteration, with at least 5cm of the lower esophageal varices and peri-/para- esophageal varices as well as the adventitial plexus of the gastric cardia and fundus filled with cyanoacrylate; (2) group B, partial obliteration with the varices surrounding the gastric cardia and fundus and their feeding vessels being obliterated with cyanoacrylate; and (3) group C, trunk obliteration, with the main branch of the left gastric vein being filled with cyanoacrylate. We performed chart reviews and prospective follow-up using multi-detector row computed tomography(MDCT) images and angiography, and gastrointestinal endoscopy.
