The introduction of new generation passenger trains with novel axle configurations and the aspiration for heavier freight vehicles travelling at increased speeds, places demands upon the existing infrastructure that have not previously been experienced. Research is necessary to establish the key track, structures and earthwork factors that constrain the operation of high speed passenger and freight services and how these can be addressed in a cost effective manner that retains or enhances current levels of safety. RSSB as part of a phased research programme have commissioned a review of existing knowledge related to dynamic loading effects on railway structures. This paper will present findings of the work undertaken, including consultation with industry stakeholders to identify research gaps that would complement existing programmes of research.
