CHARACTERISTICS OF TRACK AND TRAIN BEHAVIORS ON BRIDGE/ EMBANKMENT TRANSITION ZONE ON HIGH-SPEED TEST SECTION Il-Wha Lee, Yun-Suk Kang, Eun Kim Track Civil Engineering Research Department Korea Railroad Research Institute iwlee@krri.re.kr KEYWORD : Transition zone, Bridge, Embankment, HSR ABSTRACT It is very important to pay careful attention to construction of bridge/embankment transition zone for high-speed railway. The transition zone of the railway is the section in which roadbed stiffness is suddenly varied. Differences in stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the forces in the track and the extent of deformation. An abrupt change of stiffness across two adjacent track portions cause irregular settlement of roadbed, track irregularity, lack of girder bending moment and reduction of lateral resistance. Especially on high-speed railway, track irregularity at transition zone cause sincere effect to track stability and train safety. So continuous maintenance is needed. To verify this effect and to improve transition zone capacity, in situ test, track irregularity and train acceleration test were performed on high- speed railway bridge/embankment transition zone. INTRODUCTION We can say that transition zone in railway is the section in which sub-structure stiffness suddenly changes. For example, the joint sections of between bridge/embankment, tunnel/embankment, embankment/cutting and ballast track/non-ballast track are transition zones. It is a section that has an effect on stability and reliability of railway significantly as a changing section of structure stiffness. An excessive settlement occurs at the part of low stiffness section when the difference of stiffness causes a settlement at a transition part.
