Abstract: As an intermediate for preparing et hyl vanillin derived from glyoxyli a id, 3ethoxy4hydroxymandeli
a id ( EHMA) is synthesized based on ondensation of guaethol and glyoxyli a id in alkaline aqueous solution. Based on
optimization, optimal rea tion onditions are obt ained i. e. rea tion temperature is 50~ 60 ; rea tion time 35~ 8h;
on entration of alkali 20~ 44M . In addition, the yield of EHMA ould rea h over 80% in shorter period by partially
adding of alkaline solution gradually. The unrea ted guaethol ould be re overed.
