A Study on the Handling Characteristics and Lateral Stability of
Tractor-semitrailer Combination

［Abstract］ The handling and stability of tractor-semitrailer combination are studied with the separate defini-
tion of understeer gradient for tractor and semitrailer ，and the effects of structural parameters on the understeer gra-
dients of the combination are analyzed． By applying the stability theory of dynamic system ，the relationships between
instabilities like “jackknife ”and “lateral sway ”and handling characteristics are investigated． The results indicate
that different from two-axle single vehicle ，in which only monotonous bifurcation instability may happen ，beside that
“lateral sway ”may also take place in tractor-semitrailer combination ，and its speci
