Design and Implementation of a Database Environment for the Manipulation of Structured Do cuments Arijit Sengupta May Abstract A metho d for implementing a structured do cument database system is presented The presentday systems dealing with structured or tagged do cuments have not b een able to pro duce capabilities that even simple database systems p ossess the ability to query the database based on the various prop erties of the database Research in this area also has not b een able to pro duce query languages and visual query interfaces similar to those that exist in the relational domain The goal for the present research is to develop a complete database system for structured do cuments having data denition manipulation and querying capabilities similar to those in the relational world Only structured do cuments tagged with the SGML Gol have b een considered in which detailed and complete information ab out the do cument structuring can b e obtained from the Do cument Typ e Denition DTD Sp ecial systems that have b een considered used and evaluated are PAT Op en Text Op e sgmls Exo dus Uni Shore CDNM for purp oses of data structures parsing data storage and retrieval etc Sp ecial considerations have b een given to three sp ecial cases of data for exp erimentation purp oses a the Oxford English Dictionary OED database b the Chadwyck Healy English Po etry fulltext database and c an exp erimental movie database Intro duction Do cuments have b een a very imp ortant eld of research for a very long time The extensive use of do cu ments in ever
