The DPhil is the name Oxford gives to its doctoral degree rather than the more familiar name PhD. used in most other universities. There are typically two starting points for students who embark on this degree course. Holders of the Oxford MPhil degree may apply to the Department for transfer to DPhil status, so that they may continue their studies for a DPhil degree. The MPhil course is designed to provide training in economics at the graduate level, comparable to the first two years of the PhD programme in the best US universities. For candidates without a taught graduate degree in economics, the MPhil course is the normal route to DPhil studies
