The Bob and Rob Show Study Guide Lesson 129: Hodgepodge date: March 17, 2008 Show notes Phrasal verbs “life off” and “live on”, negative questions, and a Bubba joke. Phrasal Verbs and Idioms to live off somebody or something 1) To get things or money that one needs from someone or something eg: many right wingers complain that people on the welfare system are living off the state. 2) To live off something can mean to eat a particular type of food all the time eg: when I first went on my training program, I basically lived off tuna. I can tell you I got really bored of it!! to live on something 1) To have just so much money with which to get the things you need eg: it is so sad that most people in the world dont have enough to live on. 2) The same as number 2 from live off: to eat a particular type of food all the time eg: Vegans only live off vegetables. Note: to live on also means to continue to exist eg: even though Elvis has been dead a long time, his music lives on. IDIOM: a chatterbox This is someone who talks a lot eg: That radio DJ just carries on and on; hes a real chatterbox. BONUS IDIOM: to have the gift of the gab To be a good orator, concise and succinct in speech (gab is an old term for speech, so literally, this idiom means to have a talent for talking eg: Well son, if you want to be a successful salesman, youll need the gift of the gab. Grammar blues Here we look at negative questions: We mostly make negative yes /no questions or WH questions with an auxiliary verb + nt in order to perform the functions of criticizing, persuading, suggesting etc eg: Why dont we go out for a pint tonight? Wouldnt it be wiser to refrain from drinking due to work obligations tomorrow? Also, when we want to stress the negative because maybe we want to show we are angry or shocked for instance, or in more formal situations, it is possible to use not after the subject in negative questions, and this occurs mostly in yes/no questions rather
