This thesis is written on the basis of the project research. There is a saying that the schools of Confucianism originally separated from Song dynasty and the schools of medicine originally separated from Jin and Yuan dynasty. Completed in an era of “a hundred schools of thought contend” of medical schools, Ben Cao Fa Hui summarizes the herbal lore of all medical schools of Jin and Yuan dynasty, which has the significance of taking over from the past and sets a new course for the future. It is an important document for the research of the herbal lore of Jin and Yuan dynasty. Through the main research method of documentation science, and in combination with fieldwork, this thesis makes a profound and complete analysis and research on the herbal book Ben Cao Fa Hui, including the written time, the author’s life, the version system, the academic origin and development, etc. According to the research, Ben Cao Fa Hui was written by Xu Yanchun who lived around the late Yuan dynasty and the early Song dynasty. Xu Yanchun, th styled as Yongcheng, whose year of birth is unknown, died around the 17 year of Hongwu era of the Ming dynasty (1384).
