Advanced Algebra
Chapter 9: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
Notes
Lesson 9-1: Exponential Growth
Key Words:
Exponential Function: f(x) = abx
growth factor
when b 1, exponential growth occurs
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the costs of goods and services in the U.S. In 1980 the CPI was $100. Between 1980 and 1990, the CPI rose at an average rate of 4.7% per year. Let x = number of years after 1980, and let y = the CPI. Then the formula y = 100(1.047)x can be used to estimate the CPI. Graph the equation on an automatic grapher. Trace the graph to estimate:
the CPI in 1985: the year when the CPI will be approximately $250:
The world population in 1985 was 4.9 billion people. At the growth rate of that time, the population would double every 35 years.
Write an exponential equation modeling this situation. Let x equal the number of 35-year periods after 1985, and let p equal the population.
With this model, what would be an What was the population in 1980,
estimate for the world’s population assuming the same growth factor?
in the year 2000?
Lesson 9-2: Exponential Decay
Key Words:
Exponential Decay: growth factor is between 0 and 1
Depreciation: when goods (example: cars) decrease in value over time
Half-life: the amount of time it takes half of a material to decay
Some used-car dealers use the general rule-of-thumb that the trade-in value of a car decreases by 30% each year. This means that the car retains 70% of its value.
Sara has a car worth $6400. Write an equation that models the value of Sara’s car in x years.
How much will Sara’s car be worth Sara has owned the car for 2 years.
in 3 years? How much was it worth when she bought it?
At altitudes of less than 80 km, standard atmospheric pressure (1035 g/cm2) is halved for each
5.8 km of vertical ascent.
Describe the relationship between Graph the equation.
altitude x and pressure y.
Find the atmospheric pressure at an altitude of 40 km.
