Inordertoensurethesafetyoftheirinhabitantsandproperties，theresidential，industrialandbusinessinstallations
requirecomplyingwithNEC (nationalelectricalcode)forelectricalsystems．Electricaldesignengineersa“d
techniciansrelvheavily on thesevery importantdesign guidelines．However，these design guidelinesarenot
formallytaughtinengineeringcurriculum．Recently，astudywasperformedintheDepartmentofEE (electricl
engineerin譬)atGVSU (GrandValleyStateUniversity)aboutthepotentialinclusionofNECinourEEcurriculum
asaDartofanexistingcourseonpowersystemsanalysis．Thispaperpresentsthefindingsofthisstudyalongwith
theimplemented recommendationsundertaken afterthisstudy．A literaturesurvey wasconducted on the EE
curriculumsofotherprominentuniversitiesinthestateofMichiganandthoseofournationalpeerandaspvantpeer
universitieswithaspecialemphasisonpowerengineering．Itwasfoundthatpowerengnieernigcurriculum was
shrinking atasteady pace．Itwasalso foundthateven though NECswere importantforelectricaldesignof
installations，theyweretoomanyandtrivialofrinclusioninaformalcurriculum．Itwasproposedthatweoffera
shortcourseonNEC sothatstudentscangetfamiliarwithelectricalcodesandobtaincrucialhands。onexperience·
Comp1etionofthisshortcoursewasmadeamandatory partofqualificationofrourshop-labaccess．Impactofthis
shortcourseonstudentlearningispresentedinthispaper．
