JournalofEnvironmentalScienceandEngineeringA 1(2012)1088-1095 FormerlypartofJoumalofEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering，ISSN 掌 Ll筹 H IN ualityandSomeHeavyMetalsinW aterand SedimentsofEuphratesRiver，Iraq Jasim MohammedSalmanandHussainAllawiHussain EnvironmentalResearchCenter,CollegeofScience，BabylonUniversity,Hilla,Iraq Received：April27，2012／Accepted：September10，2012／Published：September20，2012 Abstract：W atersamples，sedimentsfrom threestationsinEuphratesRiver，Iraqwereanalyzedquantitativelyforsomephysicaland chemicalcharactersandsixheavymetals(Co，Cu，Fe，Mn，NiandPb)usingflamatomicabsorptionspectrophotpmeterinperiodSept． 2009．Oct．2010．Thephysicalandchemicalcharactersincludedtemperature，pH，waterflow，salinity，dissolvedoxygen，BOD5， alkalinitytotalhardness，calciumandnutrients(nitrite，nitratereactivephosphatenadsilicate)．Theresultsshowedvariationinwater flow0．05．0．40m／see．．accordingtothevaluesofsaliniyt 0．40％一0．60％valuesoftheBOD5werernagedbetween0．2-4．3mg／L．The meanconcentrationoftheheavy metals(Pb，Ni，Mn，Co，CuandFe)ofthedissolvedphaseinwaterwere0．13 g，L，0．021g几，0．3l g／L，4．29gg／L，7．78 g／L，6．46 g／Lna d79．04 g／L，respectively，whiletheirconcentrationintheparticulatephasewereO．59gg／g， 0．06gg／g，0．42gg／g，50．06gg／g，6．61gg／g，7．17gg／gand149．42gg／gdryweight，respectively．Alsothemeanconcentrationsof heavy metalsinsediment(exchnageablephase)were0．51gg／g，0．18gg／g，O．08gg／g，61．39gg／g，5．40gg／g，14．06gg／gnad130．05 Pg／gdry weightrespectively，and0．40 gg／g，0．17 p-g／g，O．10 Pg／g，63．01gg／g，4．64 gg／g，18．44 ,g／g and 126．26Pg／gD．W ． respectivelyinresidualphaseofsediment． Keywords：Heavymetals，waterquality，environmentalpollution，sediment，EuphratesRiver 1．Intr0ducti0n suspended sediment composition， and the water chemistry．During theirtransport，
