Ding Yuanqing Abstract Metabolic syndrome (MS) and carotid artery atherosclerosis (CAS) are independent risk factors of the occurrence of stroke. Since the incidence of stroke increases year by year, clinicians have attached more and more attention to MS and CAS. This study firstly reorganizes and induces relative concepts and contents, diagnostic criteria, and present research situation of MS and CAS. Using the method of literature reorganization combined with clinical epidemiological investigation, this article probes into the causes and pathological mechanisms of MS and CAS, and makes induction and summarization for their common clinical symptoms as well as signs. According to the investigation result, it is proposed initially that the formation of MS and CAS includes the following risk factors: (1) the middle-aged and the aged people, especially postmenopausal women;(2) physique chubbiness and obesity; (3) preferable englobement of greasy food; (4) bad habits such as smoking and drinking; (5) irritable temper; (6) snoring,phlegm-heat is the common pathological basis of MS and CAS. This study aims at providing ideas for the theoretical research on etiology and pathogenesis of MS and CAS, and their treatment as well as prevention, so that prevention work of stroke can be well carried out.
