Presentation skills 1 Work in pairs and take part in a debate entitled: The media are responsible for presenting an ideal and unrealistic expectation of how women should look. Now read through the arguments in favour of and against the title of the debate. In favour Twenty years ago the average female models weighed eight per cent less than the average American women. Today they weigh 23 per cent less. The media give us images of how we have to be in order to be attractive to ourselves and other people. Unhealthy models are victims of the fashion magazines and designers. Against The media only have an influence on people who have low self-esteem and a poor body image. Eating disorders are never caused by just one thing. Magazines only sell images that people want to see, and that the public wouldn’t find a size 14 model attractive. The size zero ban discriminates against naturally slim and healthy women who do actually exist in the real world. 2 Add two or three more arguments in favour of or against the title of the debate. 3 Work with the whole class. Decide who is going to speak in favour of the title of the debate and who is going to speak against it. 4 Find a partner who shares your position (Both of you are in favour of or against the title) and work in pairs. Decide who will speak first and second. Prepare an opening statement and a supporting statement. Prepare a very short statement to conclude. 5 Work with a pair who is presenting the position which is opposite to yours. ?First speaker against Give your short state ment to conclude ?First speaker in favour ?Second speaker against Give your supporting statement ?Second speaker in favour ?First speaker against Give your opening statement ?First speaker in favour Remember that while you’re listening to the opposing speaker, you need to check if you should change your statements accordingly. 6 Work with the whole class and vote on who has won the debate.
