Planning Phase 1. The first step is to Brainstorm all the tasks that are required to complete the project. Some of the tasks may be subsets of others so there may be a need to review and organise the list created. 2. Identify how the tasks link together by identifying the predecessors. 3. Estimate the duration for each activity. Where you are unable to confidently predict the duration of any of the tasks, break the task down to more detail activities that can be more readily predicted. 4. Identify the person that will be responsible for ensuring the task is completed. 5. Using the information in the table above construct the Gantt chart. An example of a Gantt chart is shown above. The information in the table above is all that is required to produce a Gantt-chart in MS Project. How to proceed in step 6 The objective of the entire problem solving process is to remove the problem and in many cases make it even better than before. It is very important that teams focus on the big picture while simultaneously looking short term goals. This is why milestones are set as measurement points within the implementation. If a milestone is reached without event, great.... on to the next one. If however, there is a new problem or a negative measure of performance, stop at this milestone and do some preventive action before you attempt to continue. Don’t try to bypass a major problem at a milestone. It is important to remember to communicate and report to ensure the proper implementation also elsewhere. 1. Control the implementation 2.
