Check on Internet: Grammar-Translation Method Direct Method Silent Way TPR Grammar Translation Method（语法翻译法）: a method of foreign or second language teaching which makes use of translation and grammar study as the main teaching and learning activities. The Grammar Translation Method was the traditional way Latin and Greek were taught in Europe. In the 19th Century it began to be used to teach “modern”languages such as French, German, and English, and it is still used in many countries today. A typical lesson consists of the presentation of a grammatical rule, a study of lists of vocabulary, and a translation exercise. This method emphasizes reading rather than the ability to communicate in a language. Direct Method(直接法）：The Direct Method was developed in the late 19th century as a reaction against the Grammar Translation Method. It was proposed by Terrell, which a) emphasize natural communication rather than formal grammar study; b) are tolerant of learners’ errors; c) emphasize the informal acquisition of language rules. Silent Way(沉默法）: Silent Way originated in the early 1970s by British psychologist Galeb Gattegno. The three basic tenets to the approach are a) learning is facilitated if the learners discover rather than remember or repeat; b) learning is aided by gestures, mime, visual aids or physical objects; c) problem-solving is central to learning. It is based on the premise that the teacher should be as silent as possible in the classroom in order to encourage the learner to produce as much language as possible.
