Abstract The desertification in Chaidamu Basin iS the most serious in our country,and the ecological environment is quite vulnerable．Witll the process of the Weaem Development and the increasing population of the basin,the contradictions between construction and development,population and land，resources and development, resources developmem and environmental protection which has been in front of US， becoming more and more serious and focuscd in future．It has been seriously affected the economic development of the basin and Qinghai province，even the whole country’s sustainable development of economy and security of the human’S lives and possession．As a result，it is very useful，in both reality and theories，to study on the development ofdesertification in the region and the countermeasures to the problem． On the base of analy五ng the llahlral geography,environmental geology, ecological environment and the harm of desertification,the essay lays importance on studying the causes ofdesertification,and then the mechanism ofdesertification at the preliminary level is diseussed．11他study result shows that the formation of desertification in Chmdamu iS tlle rcsult ofnatural and artificial reasons．As to natural reasons，the abnormal climate(dry)，the effect ofthe basin,pour and evaporation，the effect of animal’S destruction are taking into account,these factors are persistent， which are alSO the main impulse of development of desertification．As to artificial reasons，multiply primitive usage ofresources such as the abuse ofcultivation,ranch， firewood cutting，mine operation and water resources，which play all important role in inducing and accelerating desertification．Based on the analysis of causes of desertification．the develop process of desertification iS studied，in the meanwhile，the mechanism of different desertification iS discussed．An in a11’the abnormal weather iS the predo}minated factor,salt-contained loose accumulation provides rich material base to the formation of desert
