Numerous studies in such renowned publications as the JNCI have confirmed this long held belief. In 1996, both The WHO/EUROGIN European Research Organization on Genital Infection and Neoplasia and the NIH Consensus Conference on Cervical Cancer recognized HPV infection as the cause of cervical cancer. * * This graph shows HPV prevalence and cervical cancer incidence are a function of a woman’s age. A number of key observations can be made. First, the slide shows that in younger women, there is a high prevalence of HPV infection. However, as women age, the prevalence declines. The group of women with persistent high-risk HPV infections are the population most at risk for having or developing cervical cancer. * * * * * * * . * * * * * * * * * * * * Shown here are the desired key characteristics of the tests that are being developed, the rapid batch and rapid strip tests. It is important to note that these characteristics are targets and there is a substantial amount of work to be done before we will know if these targets are achievable. As you can see from the processing time shown in parentheses and the number of samples, these two tests will be best suited to different levels within the health care system. Although simplified, the batch test will still require procedures and equipment that are best suited to intermediate level health facilities with larger numbers of patients, or to screening campaigns.
