Lecture 13 “color” used in the language 颜色词 Different color words have different meanings in both English and Chinese. Such as: black tea 红茶, not黑茶 , brown sugar（红糖，not red sugar , brown bread 黑面包 , black cloth 青布,not黑布 , purple wine 红葡萄酒, not紫色酒 , green-eyed 眼红，not眼发绿 red meat 牛羊肉，not 红肉 white war 经济战，not 白色战争 .  “color” Sometime the color words may produce totally contradictory meanings in different cultures. Eg. in Chinese yellow has the meaning of being young, the words “黄花闺女”, “黄毛丫头”mean little girl, while in English green means being lack of experience. Such as a green hand 生手，易上当受骗的人 , green goods 新鲜货 , a green man 新手 , a green old age 老当益壮 . “color” In Chinese “white hand” means have nothing, but in English “white hand” has the meaning of being pure or unstained. If we want to express “白手起家”, we can only use “start from scratch” or “build up from nothing”. If some one says, “he has white hands”, it does not means his hand is white, but means he is immaculate. 完美的. RED 1 This color is usually associated with celebration and joyful occasions, which is true in English-speaking countries as well as in China. red-letter day 喜庆的日子 black-letter day 倒霉的一天 to paint the town red 狂欢；痛饮 Red roll out the red carpet for someone 隆重地欢迎某人 In Chinese 红双喜—double happiness written in red 开门红 -- begin well, make a good start Red is symbolic of good fortune and special joy.
