Hales (1677–1761) pioneered quantitative experimentation in botanical and physiological research. One of his best-known techniques involved the measurement of water vapor given off by plants. In another experiment, Hales grew a plant in a closed system. He observed a reduction in the volume of air above the surface of the water—a decrease of about 14%, which he attributed to the air “being imbibed into the substance of the plant.” Stephen Hales (1677–1761) Joseph Priestley （1733-1804） Joseph Priestley was an English chemist. He was born in 1733, dying in 1804. He worked on gases and discovered oxygen as did Scheele.
