Competency 7.0 Apply the fundamental principles of optical tools. Objective 7.01 Explain the concepts, terms, and scientific principles related to the use of optical tools used to communicate. Optical tools such as cameras and video cameras are often used to design, record, and deliver messages. These devices may simply record events or they may be used to encode a message to be sent using a variety of channels. Cameras are used to record events by creating photos or to produce glossy advertisements in magazines. Photo images can also be the basis for graphic creations for silk screening and advertising. Video cameras can simply record an event such as a child’s birthday or to record carefully scripted scenes, which will become part of a mass advertising campaign or instructional video. Terms to Review: Aperture: physical size of the opening, which allows light to enter a camera Camera: a “box” that controls the transfer of light to film.
