Teaching landform units can be an opportunity to use hands-on projects. Because the concept of landforms is both visual and special, giving students the chance to make their own landforms can be an effective way of using and demonstrating the units basic principals. Before beginning any of these projects, take a few lessons to teach vocabulary and assess the students background knowledge. Volcano Eruptions This project is popular among students because its creative, exciting and engaging. The students begin by making volcanoes out of paper mache, using yogurt cups to form the inside of their craters. This usually takes a while and can be messy, so take an entire lesson to complete this part of the project. After the volcanoes have dried, paint their exteriors to make them look realistic. Once they are complete, hold an eruption event and invite another class to attend. Partner your students up with students from the other class and ask them to explain how they used scientific knowledge to construct their volcanoes. Have each student fill the craters nearly to the top with warm water, 1 drop of red food coloring, and 6 drops of dish soap. Next have them add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of vinegar. The volcanoes should froth intensively, demonstrating an eruption. Salt Dough Island To explore other landmasses, have students construct a salt dough island with specific landmasses on it. It is best to make the dough the night before to avoid stressful last-minute preparation. Mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour in a bowl with 1 cup of salt. Slowly add 1/2 cup of cold water to the mix. Add more water if necessary. To store the dough overnight, wrap it completely with plastic wrap and refrigerate. In class, make a list of landfor
